Bako Nationalpark

Bako National Park is located nearly 40 km from Kuching. It is a nice introduction to Borneo's rainforest with plenty of wildlife. Main attraction is the wild proboscis monkey, which use to hang out in the trees near to the sea. Some trails are available in the park. With hiking on two trails - one in the morning, one after lunch - you have a good chance meeting the monkeys. It is not an easy thing to find them in the trees. Therefore, you have to listen carefully to their grumbling in order to locate them. Being patient is the second ability you have to bring with you when searching for the wild monkeys. We have been told that it is more easy to see the proboscis in the early morning at the beach, where they use to have their breakfast. An overnight stay would be necessary though.

Next to proboscis, silver leafed monkeys can be spotted. They are very cute as well.

The park can be reached by boat. Starting from Bako National Park Terminal it takes you a 25 to 30 minutes boat ride to reach the main building in the park. From there, you can start the trails easily. Accommodation and food & beverages are available as well. From our point of view, it was the correct decision to stay at the park for a day only. Accommodation did not really look nice to us. Many spots have been under constructions, other houses better should be under construction than being rented out. Although, you may see a more bright birdlife in the early morning, we are very happy with what we spotted the day in the forest: Proboscis, Silver Leaf Monkeys, many beautiful butterflies, snakes, turtles, and wild boars are the ones worth to mention.
