Sarawak's history is defined by the sailor man James Brook, who founded the Kingdom of Sarawak. Today Sarawak is a state of Malaysia, located in the Northwest of Borneo.
The story about James Brook is visible in the city and told by many people who talk to you about Kuching. Sometimes people tell you different versions, so better read it online by yourself. The city does not offer a lot to see. With the view on the Sarawak River and the City Council, you probably have seen most of the nice sights of Kuching.
A walk along the riverside can be a nice alternative after dinner. For the sunset, our hotel room offered the best view. We did not find any public spot, where you have a view like this.
The more impressive attraction in Kuching is Semenggho Wildlife Center, where semi wild Orang Utans are home.
It can be visited in the morning or afternoon - for 1 hour only. This is due to the fact that the animals can enjoy their semi wild life in the forest.
In general, we experienced Kuching's citizens as very friendly and helpful. In contrast to anonymous taxi rides in Singapore, the people in Borneo always showed interest in us. Furthermore, we always felt save and welcome to Borneo.
In case you want to make use of the relatively cheap prices in Kuching, you may visit Vivacity Megamall for shopping. If you need some equipment for a trip to the jungle, it is best to buy it in Kuching. Prices are better and all common equipment is available.
