Hong Kong - vibrant and extraordinary.
All we knew about Hong Kong is that it is the most eastern westernized part in Asia. With its history and location, Hong Kong was and still is an important hub in Asia. We expected a similar culture and people as we are used to from Singapore. But we soon realized that Hong Kong is much more different than Singapore.
Planning this trip and having talked to locals in Singapore, they were wondering why we go there. A typical reaction was "why go Hong Kong - same as Singapore". Many of them added a "nice food over there".
And to be honest, they haven't been wrong at all. But Hong Kong is worth going there. We enjoyed a long weekend in the city state and can recommend visiting this place.
Planning the trip was a challenge. You easily get a well priced flight with a proper airline - but finding a hotel or better say accommodation was not that easy. If we go there again, we definitely have to book far in advance - to make sure we get a hotel, well priced, in a central location.
After hours of hotel search we chose not to stay in a hotel but in a serviced apartment. This was the only place were we had the feeling to book an accommodation, which offers a fair deal. We staid at Two Macdonnel Road and we probably would go there again.
The "hotel" is very well located - we just walked to Soho where we spent most of our time - and we enjoyed a normal sized room, which is seldom if you stay in Hong Kong. As the space is very limited, the rooms and units are extremely tiny. In addition we had breakfast included - and a nice skyline view from our room. Except the weather, we could call it a very smooth start into our Hong Kong trip.
Having arrived in Hong Kong we walked to Soho for having dinner. We went to a place called the Carbone - an Italian restaurant, which makes you believe you are in New York and not in Honk Kong. With its super classy style and vibe, we started liking this city being curios what the place has to offer during daylight.
And days in Hong Kong can be chaotic. At least it seems to be chaotic.
The streets were packed on our walks through the city. Our first walk led us to the harbour front, where we also took a boat ride to Hing Kong Mainland from where you have a great view on
Hong Kong Island. Maybe the view is even better is the weather is clear.
It took us a while until we adopted ourselves to the pulse of the city. We concentrated on Hong Kong Island for our exploration as there are plenty places to see and it just was good to be there. We spent most of the time strolling through the streets of Hong Kong - the city and its vibes is art itself, so you do not need to plan much where to go. Two points of interest we really liked is the Man Mo Temple and the Victoria Peak as it offers a beautiful lookout over the city.
Hing Kong has to be explored. It is hard to say how it is and what to do. We loved it the way it was, although the weather was not really good. We went to nice cafes and bars, stopped at small boutiques that can be found especially in Soho, we met friends from Singapore when hiding from heavy rain in a bar, we were 'locked up' in a temple during a thunderstorm... It was different - but it was cool.
Look at the pictures and you may have an impression of what to do in Hong Kong: just let it happen when you are there.
