Australia - from Perth to Darwin

A trip to Australia demands a lot of planning, preparation and probably discussions: where to go, what is the best route, where to stay overnight, which sightings to see.

But this time was different for us - it has been the 4th trip to Australia in the last few years. And since we had our first camping experience in Western Australia in 2017 - we were pretty relaxed when it came to planning. All we did in advance was booking the flights from Singapore to Perth - and the camper was rented 3 weeks before we arrived.

Honestly speaking, this was somewhat too close to the departure date as most of the well known rental companies had no cars available anymore. Nevertheless, we have found a solid camper in Perth.

We had 18 days for traveling from Perth to Darwin - and we knew that the distance from Perth to Darwin will be around 4,000 km. In the end we travelled 5,789km.

The most relevant attitude you should have is flexibility. Although we roughly had in mind where to go and what to see - the best places have been those we haven't been aware of. The two major activities we wanted to do was "Whale Shark Snorkeling" at Coral Bay and driving the famous "Gibb River Road".

Having arrived in Perth on a Sunday morning - our plans were somewhat challenged by the immigration officer, who asked his general questions "whose are" and "where we go". After telling him that we drive up to Perth he responded: "Ay,  lovely area - you gonna do the bungle bungle ride?" Our answer was self explaining, nothing to repeat here - the officer probably realized that we were not prepared pretty well and let us pass. The question of what the "bungle bungle drive" is will be answered. And it was one of the highlights of our tour in the end. And we skipped the Gibb River Road after that.

In a nutshell - our tour started in Perth. We have been there before so we decided to skip the city and head north as fast as possible.
As we wanted to focus on the things we have not seen before, we skipped several locations you should go to when you are traveling Western Australia for the very first time. On the way from Perth to our first major stop - Francois Peron Nationalpark - we were reminiscing about our adventures in 2017: Yanchep Nationalpark, Lancelin Sand Dunes, The Pinnacles, the Pink Lake, the Island Rock near Kalbarri, Kalbarri Nationalpark and God's Window. And of course the wine region south of Perth in Margret River. All these are places you should visit - but this time we wanted to rather focus on territories we haven't been to yet. And due to our limited time, we unfortunately had to skip these beautiful locations.

The highlights on the way through Western Australia and the Northern Territory were the following:

  • Francois Peron Nationalpark - to watch the dolphins and offroad driving
  • Coral Bay  - Whale Shark Snorkeling
  • Karijini Nationalpark - where red sand kisses beautiful landscapes
  • Broome - the hidden easy life in WA
  • Purnululu - the Bungle Bungles
  • Kununurra - Wildlife at Lake Argyle
  • Kakadu Nationalpark

Places we are happy to have had the chance to see - at the same time probably places you will only visit once in a life time.
